The new Nokia smartphone Lumia 610 which runs under the new Windows Phone mobile operating system won’t be using Skype. This was the conclusion that the people from the Finnish company reached after some initial testing. It turned out that the Nokia Lumia 610 phones don’t have enough memory to run the VoIP software for free and cheap calls. The developers of Skype announced early on that their app would require at least 512MB RAM, but the Lumia 610 smartphones have only 256 MB RAM.
Up until now Lumia 610 users could still download the Skype app for Windows Phone from the Marketplace despite the warning from the app itself that it requires 512 MB RAM to run properly. However, Skype was still functioning on the Lumia 610 phones although not “up to par with Nokia’s and Skype’s expectations”. For the time being Nokia and Microsoft won’t offer Skype from the Marketplace for Lumia 610 smartphones. All the user who installed the app on their mobile phones would still be able to use it but all the Nokia 610 users who want to try Skype on their phones won’t have access to the app.
Skype will still be available on other Lumia smartphone devices.
