The dominance of USA as a leader in the use of mobile communication is under threat according to report by Wireless Intelligence research company. The report predicts that by the end of March 2012 China will surpass the 1 billion mobile connection. As of now the three major mobile operators in China – China Mobile, China Unicorn and China Telecom combined have 973.7 million active mobile connections.
The spike in 3G connections in China is also notable of all the mobile connections in China around 22% are 3G connection, which corresponds to over 217 million connection. This statistic is further strengthen by fact that on the mobile phones market in China, around 80% of all sold cell phones for 2011 were smartphones or other mobile data devices (tablets, etc.)
Although China is the largest market for subscribers growth in the world, this growth was due to sells of low-end mobile phones and voice services. But now the focus of the mobile technology consumers in China has shifted towards smartphones and 3G mobile connection, which is evident by the unrest that Chinese citizens caused in front of the Apple stores in Shanghai and Beijing on the premiere of Apple 4S on the Chinese market. The stores were force to close and special police forces were brought to the scene to control the angry crowd.
The growth in use of smartphones in China has prompt Apple to say that its most important market outside USA is precisely the communist country. The future trend in the use of mobile connections is also suggesting that Apple is on the right track with this statement. In USA the active mobile connections are over 320 million which exceeds the population of the country, while in China the population is around 1.3 billion according to the last census which leaves plenty of space for further growth of the mobile connection and smartphone use in the future.
